Conducting Workshops

For two decades, John worked as a staffer for American Symphony Orchestra League (ASOL)  conducting workshops. In this capacity, he gave detailed, individual instruction to hundreds of conductors over the years.

In May 2001, John drew on his ASOL experience to launch the California Conducting Institute. Since then, he has worked with fellow conductors Daniel Lewis and Donald Thulean, and musicians from the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra, to  teach students from around the world.

Mr. Farrer founded and began directing the London Conducting Workshop in 2005. It is currently held at the Royal Academy of Music. In 2008 he started the London Conducting Workshop at Champs Hill, which allows conductors to work with piano four hands at a beautiful private estate in West Sussex.

All three of the conducting workshops have attracted students from 6 continents and 20 countries. More than 200 students have participated in total. The workshops provide a unique opportunity for conducting students to receive individual instruction, podium time with a live orchestra, and networking opportunities with fellow participants
